About Us | History & Purpose

MAAPPNG originated in 1986 in Atlanta, Georgia. We are a non-profit organization made up of Advanced Practice Mental Health/Psychiatric Nurses. Originally, we were known as the Metro Atlanta Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse Group but as our membership grew, we kept the MAAPPNG acronym, and renamed the organization Moving Ahead with Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses in Georgia. Our bylaws stipulate the following objectives for MAAPPNG:


1. Promote quality mental health care for the public

2. Educate the public about the mental health/psychiatric nursing specialty

3. Promote research and disseminate research findings with the area

4. Provide continuing education activities for specialty practice

5. Support various roles of the nurse specialist, including psychotherapist, teacher,           and leader

6. Meet and network with colleagues
